A Northern Irish dentist is set to become the new president of the British Dental Association. Dr Barry McGonigle, from Omagh, Northern Ireland, will officially become the new president of the BDA on the 25th April.

Dr McGonigle will officially take the reins from Dr Frank Holloway at the BDA’s conference and exhibition and will become the association’s 127th president.

Graduating from the University of Manchester, Dr McGonigle went on to complete further training at the Turner Hospital. He then travelled to the Republic of Ireland to work as an assistant dental surgeon. Dr McGonigle then relocated to Manchester to take up a position at Manchester Royal Infirmary before moving to York, in order to work as an associate partner. In 1982, Dr McGonigle moved back to the family practice in Omagh and he has worked there since.

Being an active member of the BDA since 1983, Dr McGonigle has already held positions of high esteem, including chair of the BDA’s Education Committee and the International Affairs Committee. He was also the first Northern Irish dentist to chair the UK National LDC Conference.

Dr McGonigle stated that he was looking forward to taking up his new position on the 25th April and said that he was “hugely honoured” to be appointed BDA president, especially in the year that the Northern Irish branch celebrates its 90th anniversary.

He went on to say that he is looking forward to the new challenges presented by the role and is honoured to be representing the profession.
