North Yorkshire Dental Nurse Becomes Internet Sensation After Posting No Makeup Selfie

Sample News Big

A dental nurse from North Yorkshire has become an internet sensation after posting a no makeup selfie with a difference.

Amy Elsegood joined in the Facebook no makeup selfie craze along with many of her friends and social media contacts, but Amy’s picture made waves thanks to her honesty and confidence. Amy was born with a port-wine birthmark on her face and usually uses makeup to cover it. Her selfie attracted hundreds of comments and many girls and women said her honest photograph had inspired them to be more confident.

Amy has since used the interest her post generated to reach out to other people who have birthmarks of cosmetic imperfections in a bid to make them feel more comfortable in their own skin. She has encouraged many to post their own photos and also offers tips to apply makeup and use products available on the NHS. Amy didn’t expect her post to attract much attention, but she has been overwhelmed by the response and is delighted to be helping others achieve a more positive body image.

Amy’s story has been featured as part of a BBC campaign to improve confidence. BBC BodyPositive is all about encouraging people to focus on the positives and not be too judgmental when it comes to your image. Today, many of us prioritise what we look like and admit to comparing ourselves to others. The aim of the campaign is to encourage every person to embrace their flaws and be more confident, just like Amy did.
