A dental team from the North West has shared its experience of travelling to Morocco to provide dental care.

Dr Navid Tahir and colleagues from Whitworth Dental Care and Park House practices in Rochdale and Accrington visited Morocco in October 2022 as part of a Dental Mavericks project.

During their time in North Africa, the team was based in the remote Rif Mountains, where local communities have very limited to access to even the most basic dental services.
Dr Tahir was joined by Dr Mehak Sohail and Joanna Sobecka for the trip. The trio covered the costs of travel and accommodation, raising funds through Just Giving.

As well as providing dental care for local populations, the dental professionals also handed out essential supplies and equipment, which will enable people to access better care in the future. The team visited four locations over the course of five days, treating many patients and providing supplies for over 1,850 children.
The team is committed to supporting the work of Dental Mavericks and is already planning the next trip out to Morocco. The long-term goal is to construct a purpose-built dental clinic in the Rif Mountains to enable local populations to access dental services.

To raise money for the visit, the practice teams engaged in several fundraising activities ranging from a sponsored walk around Dovestone Reservoir to selling braids and bracelets at local family-friendly festivals in Didsbury and Littleborough. The target was set at £15,000 but the trio managed to raise a total of almost £17,400. Dr Tahir and his team thanked everyone who donated for their generosity and support.
