North Carolina Health Department Invests in Ground-Breaking X-Ray Technology

The Macon County Health Department, North Carolina, have recently invested in new digital X-ray equipment in a bid to save time and improve assessment accuracy.

Current X-ray devices are difficult to place in children’s mouths, they are often uncomfortable and many still express their concerns regarding the radiation that they emit.

Furthermore, outdated X-ray devices don’t take complete images of the mouth, meaning that dentists often have tunnel vision when it comes to treating their patients. This often results in further examination of the teeth to determine what the problems are, again, taking up much more time.

Dr Hannah Yausunaga stated that it was one of their largest purchases and says that it will be extremely beneficial, as it will consider the whole facial structure, including the jaw and the sinus region.

What’s more, the images don’t need developing as they’re displayed directly onto the dentist’s computer. This means that the dentist can instantly make a decision regarding what treatments to issue (if any) and it makes it more interesting for the patient to have a look at too.

Kim Sabin-Pritchett, the clinics coordinator, said that it saves a lot of time because if the image isn’t usable then it can be simply taken again in a matter of seconds.

The clinic is currently on par with private dental practices and plans to display their X-ray images around their dental suites. This is to encourage children in particular, to maintain a good standard of oral hygiene.
