Norfolk MP vows to continue fighting for new dental school

Norfolk MP, Jerome Mayhew, has vowed to continue fighting for a new dental school in East Anglia after health minister, Will Quince, said that the proposed project was a “no for now.”

At a House of Commons debate recently, Mr Mayhew and other local MPs discussed the possibility of opening a new training school at the University of East Anglia. The university already has a medical school and Mr Mayhew believes that adding a dental school would boost dentist numbers in the region. There is currently a shortage of NHS dental professionals and there are no dental schools in the East of England.

Speaking after the debate, the MP for Broadland said that it was only the start of a very long process. He will now liaise with the university to firm up proposals to help him lobby for the cause and he believes that there is hope for the project, which was not ruled out by the health minister.

Mr Mayhew explained that the dental school is a “long-term plan for a major change.” He suggested that the first debate was one of many ducks that needed to be in line to get approval and added that he was confident about the proposals due to “universal support from the region’s MPs.” As well as discussing the plan at the debate with Mr Quince, Mr Mayhew confirmed that he had raised the issue with the Prime Minister who is “fully aware of the challenges facing dentistry in Norfolk.”
