NHS Shetland has confirmed the appointment of a new dental director.

Brian Chittick will take over the reins from Ray Cross, who is due to retire at the end of the week. Mr Chittick will be moving from his position of senior dental officer on an initial 12 month contract.

In a statement, NHS Shetland executives said Mr Chittick has extensive experience in leadership and was excited to take on a new challenge. During his career, Mr Chittick has worked in a number of settings in various roles, including a spell in the Royal Navy.

Simon Bokor-Ingram, community health and social care director, paid tribute to Mr Cross and thanked him for all his hard work and dedication. He added that Mr Cross leaves behind a stable foundation on which to build in the coming months and years. He has created an effective, secure system that has served Shetland dental patients well in the past and there is every chance the service will go from strength to strength in the future.

Recently, Mr Chittick has been working with Mr Cross to facilitate a seamless handover. He will keep some of his clinical sessions, but will be devoting most of his time to putting the oral health strategy, which is currently being devised by the integration board, into action. When he takes up the new role, Mr Chittick will be based at Montfield Dental Clinic.
