NHS Limiting Free Orthodontic Treatment in Scotland

Sample News Big

Parents of some children with orthodontic problems are bracing themselves for increased dental bills, after the NHS announced that it was changing the criteria for free orthodontic treatments for children in Scotland.

Dentists in Scotland have been notified of the proposed changes, which will bring Scotland in line with other parts of the UK. Under the new rules, fewer children will receive orthodontic treatment on the NHS and complex cases will be prioritised.

The new requirements will restrict the number of children entitled to free treatment and children with minor orthodontic problems will not be offered free treatment, as there is not enough money available to fund treatment for everyone.

The news has been met with anger from some parents, as they will now face bills, which could run into the thousands. Some people have also suggested that children with minor problems may still be affected psychologically and therefore it is wrong to prioritise cases based solely on physiology.

The Scottish government has confirmed that the proposals will ensure that people who need treatment get treatment and the NHS will fund treatment for children in need, but it will not pay for cosmetic improvements, as there is not an infinite pot of money and NHS funding must be used in a way that benefits as many people as possible.
