NHS Coventry has announced the launch of a large-scale campaign to raise awareness of oral hygiene and oral health.

The Broader Beams and Wider Smiles programme is being launched as part of National Smile Month, a national campaign which is run by the British Dental Health Foundation. The new programme has been set up to educate people about oral health and provide them with information about how to find and register with an NHS dentist. The scheme will target around 42,000 households and will also offer information packs to local shoppers and homeless people.

Information about local NHS dental services will be plastered all over the city, on buses, in shop windows, in local dental practices and in the newspapers; it is hoped that people will take notice of the banners and posters and will feel encouraged to register with a local NHS dentist and make the most of local services available to them.

The information packs and posters will also provide information about free dental care on the NHS; free care is provided for under 18s, those aged 18 and in full time education, pregnant women and people who claim jobseekers allowance and other benefits. The scheme is aiming to encourage those who feel that can’t afford dental care to come forward and get the treatment they want.

National Smile Month will run until the 16th June and will aim to raise national standards of oral health.
