Newport dentist submits plans to expand practice

A dentist from Newport is awaiting a decision after submitting plans to expand a busy city dental practice.

Dr Rachael Gill-Randall has applied to change the use of a first floor flat, which is located above Devon Place 7 Day Dental. If the application is approved, the practice will be able to expand, providing more appointments at a time when pressure on dental services is at an all-time high.

The application outlines proposals to change the use of the premises from a residential to a non-residential property. If the plans get the green light from officers at Newport City Council, the apartment above the existing practice will be converted into two surgeries, as well as a cleaning facility, a reception and waiting area and an office.

The practice already has four dental suites, but the demand for treatment is increasing. If the plans get the go ahead, the team would be able to increase capacity, allowing more patients in the local area to access dental treatment.

Dentists across the UK are currently tackling backlogs due to the pandemic and restrictions placed on practices, which limit patient numbers.

Services are stretched and many areas have a shortage of dentists, which is contributing to lengthy waiting times for patients.

New surgeries at Devon Place 7 Day Dental would help to reduce waiting times in Newport and enable more local residents to access dental care without travelling long distances, according to the application.

The proposal is now being considered by planning teams at Newport City Council and a decision is expected in the coming weeks.
