Newcastle student wins young dental prize

A dental student from Newcastle University has won the top gong in a national competition.

Rhiannon Davies was given the Junior Colgate Prize in a special ceremony in Glasgow for her exceptional academic performance as a dentistry student.

She received the award at the British Society for Dental Research’s (BSDR) annual conference for the her paper ‘Do patients with aggressive periodontitis have subclinical diabetes?’.

Her paper, which also earned her a Masters degree with distinction, examined research carried out under the tutelage of Dr John Taylor and Professor Philip Preshaw at the university’s School of Dental Sciences.

As the winner of the prize, as well as £3,000 to fund her undergraduate research, Ms Davies will now compete for the Junior Hatton Prize as the BSDR’s representative.

The competition takes place in Barcelona at the International Association of Dental Research meeting during July 2010.
