New York art gallery funds dental treatment for uninsured patients

An art gallery based in Manhattan, New York is funding dental treatment for uninsured patients.

The Smile Design Gallery is located within Smile Design Manhattan. Both the art gallery and the dental practice were founded by Dr Lee Gause, a visionary who wanted to make a difference to the thousands of people who don’t have dental insurance.

Dr Gause uses proceeds from the sale of art displayed in the Manhattan gallery to pay for dental services for patients who don’t have insurance or the funds to cover dental treatment.

Speaking about the venture, Dr Gause said that it is a “way of combining our passion with art with our love for dentistry. Dentistry is, in fact, the greatest gift we have to give.”

The art hanging on the walls of the gallery is for sale, with funds raised by the pieces used directly for dental services for people who cannot afford to see a dentist. Sales usually range from $1,000 to $50,000 per lot.

Statistics suggest that over 76 million Americans don’t have dental insurance. Dr Gause described the demand for dental care in the US as “incredible” and added that it was virtually impossible for those who need “major rehabilitation” to access the care required.

Sonianne Webster is one of many uninsured patients who have benefited from visiting the gallery. Two years ago, she fell and knocked out her front teeth. Without insurance or cash to pay for treatment, she struggled with low confidence until she came across Dr Gause and his unique practice. She visited on Christmas Eve and is full of compliments for the service, which has enabled her to smile and “feel beautiful” again.

The gallery is open to the public on Sundays and is free of charge.
