New Year Honours for Newcastle University Dental Professor

Professor Jimmy Steele, from Newcastle University, has been named on the Queen’s New Year Honours List.

Professor Steele, Head of the School of Dental Sciences, was awarded a CBE for Services to Dentistry and Oral Health.

Professor Steele started teaching at Newcastle University in 1989 and has been involved in several high-profile research studies, including research into how the National Health Service operates and has combined his academic study with clinical practice, working as a consultant at Newcastle Hospital. Professor Steele was asked to carry out a review of NHS dental services in England in 2008 and he is actively involved in advising the government on improving the dental contract and solving problems with NHS dental services.

Professor Steele has received numerous awards, including the 2008 International Association of Dental Research Distinguished Scientist Award.

Professor Steele said that he now believes NHS dentistry is moving in the right direction and added that the CBE is a great honour.
