A new dental clinic will cater for 6,000 patients, it has been confirmed.

The clinic, which is due to open at Dunbar Hospital in Thurso, will provide NHS and private care, with around 80 percent of the gross income coming from NHS services.

NHS Highland chairman, Gary Coutts, told local trade union representatives that the centre should be up and running during the summer months. Mr Coutts said that the main aim of the facility is to improve access to dental services for people living in the area.

The new clinic will employ three dentists and a dental hygienist and all dentists working at the facility will be required to be on the NHS Highland list. Dentists can carry out private dental work but there will be restrictions.

Members of the trade union and local people have been campaigning for a new dental clinic for some time and they welcomed the news that the new facility at Dunbar Hospital will open soon.

The new facility is part of a 5.6 million pound investment to boost NHS dental services in Thurso, Oban, Inverness, Campbelltown and Dingwall.
