A new patient support group for people with head and neck cancer has been launched on the Isle of Man.

Noble’s Hospital’s Ear, Nose and Throat Department has set up the support group to bring together patients who have suffered from head and neck cancer and those who are still battling the diseases; in recognition of the difficulties people face, the group decided upon the name, The Manx Swallows.

The group is lead by patients for patients and gives people the opportunity to share their experiences, talk to others in the same boat and confront issues together rather than alone.

The group is also supported by doctors and medical professionals at the hospital who are on hand to answer questions and guide patients towards the group. The team is lead by Mr Richard Hogg, an ENT consultant, who set up the Manx Swallows to provide patients with long-term support and the chance to share their experiences with others who are facing similar challenges.

Mr Hogg and the ENT team believed that it would be beneficial for patients to have access to a long-term support system, which would enable them to tackle issues with the help of others around them.

Head and neck cancers are becoming more common and dentists and doctors are encouraging people to look out for the following symptoms: slow-healing sores, trouble with swallowing, abnormal lumps in the mouth or throat and a persistent sore throat.
