New Study Reveals Milk Is The Key To Fighting Decay

A new study has revealed that drinking a glass of milk after breakfast, every morning, significantly reduces the risk of developing dental decay.

The study, which was carried out in America, shows that drinking even a small glass of milk after breakfast reduces the risk of decay by decreasing the amount of plaque acids in the mouth by more than half.

The study was conducted by researchers at the Department of Pediatric Dentistry at the University of Illinois. A group of twenty adults was given a bowl of cereal followed by a glass of milk, a glass of fruit juice or a glass of water. Acid levels were found to be much lower in the participants who had a glass of milk, with an average pH level of 6.48 compared to 6.02 for water and 5.83 for apple juice.

Dr Nigel Carter OBE, chief executive of the British Dental Health Foundation, said that it is important for people to realise the impact their eating habits have on their oral health. Many are aware that eating sugary foods is bad for the teeth. However, it is actually more important to reduce the frequency of snacking because every time you eat, plaque acids are released by bacteria in the mouth and they attack the enamel, leaving it temporarily weak. Eating three meals a day means that the teeth only have to withstand 3 attacks per day, which is preferable to several attacks, which are caused by constant grazing through the day.
