New study reveals illegal overstrength vapes are highly addictive

A new study has revealed that vaping using illegal, overstrength e-cigarettes can be highly addictive.

A report, which was compiled by Inter Scientific, shows that some vapes that are sold in the UK contain excessive levels of nicotine. Even those that claim to be nicotine-free can contain quantities that encourage addictive behaviours. Some of these products contain the same level of nicotine as full-strength products.

Researchers found that 73% of the products they analysed had a tank capacity, which exceeded the 2ml legal limit. The team evaluated more than 50 products sold in England. Around 20% of the vapes purchased had 5ml tanks. Eight of the devices, which claimed to be nicotine-free, contained the highly addictive substance.

Vaping is often encouraged by health and dental experts as an alternative to smoking, as e-cigarettes have a lower nicotine quantity and they don’t contain many of the harmful substances found in cigarettes, such as tar. Many smokers choose to gradually reduce the nicotine content when vaping to enable them to give up smoking and vaping completely, but this report suggests that vendors are misleading consumers.

Dentist, Nilesh Parmar, called for tighter restrictions on vaping to ensure that individuals know exactly what they are buying. Vaping is safer than smoking but it can still be addictive, especially if people are buying full-strength products when they think they are buying vapes that contain very small quantities of nicotine. The aim is to encourage people to replace smoking with vaping and for them to quit both, rather than to push individuals towards long-term vaping, which is not without risks.
