New scheme to transform dental access

A new telemedicine project is set to revolutionize access to dentistry in California.

Virtual Dental Home (VDH) has been pioneered of University of the Pacific’s Arthur A Dugoni School of Dentistry and hopes to help people accress the state.

The program allow dentists to review patient’s dental records from a different location and then advise patients and local dental assistants on the best way to treat the patient’s oral health needs.

Some reports have suggested that VDH could improve access to dentistry for many underprivileged people from the San Fernando Valley.

A VDH pilot project will run for four years and will be funded by The Verizon Foundation.

If the project is a success many rural communities could soon have far better dental provision without the need for lots of local dental practices.

The technology could be more lucrative for dentists too as they could serve several rural communities or urban areas without having to leave their office.
