A new scheme to cut waiting times for dental appointments for children has launched in Jersey.

From January, five private dental clinics on the island will be offering free routine checks for children. The aim is to reduce waiting lists. There are currently more than 1,000 children waiting to see a dentist for their first check-up.

Sarah Evans, general manager for the community dental team, said that utilising the private practices had already made a positive impact on waiting times, which increased substantially during the pandemic. Working alongside private providers has enabled the team to boost capacity, enabling more children to access routine services faster.

The new scheme has been funded by the government as part of the Covid-19 Recovery Strategy. If children need further treatment after the first check-up, they will remain under the care of private dentists.

Deputy Karen Wilson, minister for health and social services, described the initiative as “a great example of primary and secondary care working in partnership to deliver better services for children who have been affected by delays caused by the pandemic.”

The scheme will benefit children aged between four and 11 years old. Currently, five private clinics are taking part. Treatment will be provided free of charge. Parents who would like to know more about whether their child can access services are encouraged to contact their regular dentist or seek advice on the health service website.
