Plans to move part of Doncaster’s Dental Access Centre have been revealed.

A spokesman for NHS Doncaster confirmed that one dentist will stay in the current Mexborough site and another will be moved to a new town centre venue on St Sepulchre Gate West. The spokesman said that discussions about the move have been underway for some time and the decision to move part of the service has been taken to improve access to dental services across the town.

Although the plans have been created to improve access to dental services, they have caused controversy amongst local people. The Dental Access Centre was set up in 2004 to improve access to NHS dental care in the area and local people have benefited from the service and so many people living in the east of the town feel that the move will affect their ability to access dental services.

The Mexborough facility provides training for dental students, as well as NHS dental care for residents. From 2012, one dentist will move to the new town centre location and three dental students will also make the move.

An NHS spokesman said that the current services will be maintained but access in the town centre will be improved by the relocation of one of the dentists and a team of dental students. He also confirmed that the trust has recruited 11 new dentists and a number of new practices are due to open in the coming weeks.

Mexborough Councillor, David Holland, was angered by the plans and suggested that this was yet another example of everything moving into the centre of Doncaster.
