Health bosses in Wales are planning to launch an outreach orthodontist service in Ceredigion.

Representatives from Hywel Dda Health Board have revealed plans to improve access to orthodontic services for young people in the Ceredigion area. At the moment, young people face a lengthy trip for treatment, with some having to travel as far as Swansea, which is 75 miles away, for treatment. The health board said that it understands patients’ concerns and is now planning to introduce an outreach scheme to reduce travelling time and costs.

Ceredigion Assembly Member, Elin Jones and Aberystwyth councillor, Paul James, have now urged the health board to address the problem quickly, as young people are reliant on their parents for transport and children are missing whole days of school as a result of having to travel for specialist treatment.

During a meeting between Ms Jones and the health board, health bosses outlined plans to improve the situation, which Jones said was currently “unacceptable.” Dr Sue Fish, from the Hywel Dda Health Board, said that she understood the concerns and was working to improve the situation and considering measures, such as encouraging local dentists to develop an interest in orthodontics.
