A new public service campaign to promote oral health will target senior citizens in a bid to raise awareness of the importance of good oral health.

The campaign, which is being managed by Delta Dental of New Jersey Foundation, has been launched to coincide with Health Aging Month. The Health Aging Month campaign involves a series of events and informational sessions, which will encourage older people to take steps towards a healthier lifestyle.

Oral health is often an indicator of general health and Delta Dental is keen to spread the message to older people; most people are unaware of the potential dangers associated with poor oral health. Numerous studies have now found that oral health problems can contribute to serious medical conditions, including an increased risk of heart disease, strokes and diabetes. Poor oral health can also have serious implications for self-esteem and body confidence.

The Delta Dental campaign will involve community events, as well as public service announcements and adverts, which will be broadcast on the radio and television. The broadcasts aim to teach older people about the importance of looking after their teeth and gums, as well as encouraging them to go to their dentist for regular check-ups. Research shows that many people give up on oral health after a certain age because they are resigned to the fact that their teeth are going to fall out; however, now many treatments can be used to replace damaged and missing teeth and this can make a huge difference to an individual’s quality of life.
