New mums in America are set to benefit from a text messaging service that offers tips and helpful hints on caring for their baby’s teeth.

Dental health is perhaps not the first thing on a new mum’s agenda, however dental health amongst younger children is declining year on year and health experts and dentists are keen for parents to promote good oral health as early on as possible.

The new service, which will provide mums with text messages containing snippets of advice on a regular basis, has been set up by the Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition and is known as Text4Baby. The text messages will be tailored to suit the age of the individual child and will be provided free of charge by a number of different network operators, including AT&T, Verizon and Sprint.

Text4Baby is an innovative, informative new service which will benefit mothers without any charge; executive director of the Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition, Judy Meehan believes the text messaging service will provide valuable information for new mothers and could help to improve the standard of dental health amongst young children in the future.

The concept is supported by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry; representatives have stressed the need for parents to encourage their children to eat healthily and get involved in oral hygiene from as early an age as possible. Young children who enjoy good oral health will have a much lower risk of developing speech problems and will be more likely to be successful in the future; research has consistently shown that people who are happy with their smile have higher self-esteem and confidence and are therefore more likely to succeed in both their professional and social lives.
