New mouthwash gives long-term protection

Boffins believe they have created a new mouthwash that can provide a long-term guard against tooth decay.

The researchers, from the Medical Center at the University of Nebraska (UoN), claim to have discovered an innovative system which sends antimicrobial agents straight to teeth.

Cavities are largely caused by acid-producing bacteria that live in the biofilm layer which covers teeth. This new formula binds to the surface of the teeth and gradually releases antimicrobials which kill the harmful bacteria.

Dr Dong Wang, UoN‘s associate professor of pharmaceutical science, said that the research was effective as it could be adapted for the everyday oral health routine and offers long-term protection against decay.

The same team of scientists are now looking at ways to improve treatments for a number diseases, including cancer and arthritis, based on the principles of the mouthwash discovery.
