A new mobile unit will soon be launched to severe rural areas in Malaysia.

The Health Ministry has confirmed that a new 1Malaysia dental unit will soon hit the roads to provide dental care for people living in remote communities.

Health Director General, Dr Hasan Abdul Rahman, confirmed that the project will be launched in the Pahang area in the coming weeks. Speaking at the 19th International Scientific Convention and Trade Exhibition, Dr Hasan said that the mobile unit will play an important role in providing dental treatment and education to people in remote villages, where standards of oral health tend to be poor.

Dr Hasan confirmed that the mobile clinic would visit rural villages on a regular basis. The unit will be fully equipped to provide a range of treatments and dentists will work in the clinic on a rotational basis.

Dr Hasan also said that it was important that people change their attitude to oral health, as at the moment, most people only visit a dentist when they are suffering from severe pain. Routine check-ups and good oral hygiene will help to prevent problems from developing and therefore reduce the number of people requiring complex treatment.

Some communities have no public transport links and it is difficult for people to get to a dental clinic, so the unit will travel to them and if the programme is successful, it will be expanded to other remote areas.
