A new dental bus has hit the roads around Swansea to try and improve standards of oral health among children in the area.

The bus was launched at Clywd School in Penlan on Friday 3rd February, after research carried out as part of the government’s ‘Designed to Smile’ scheme identified the area as “high need.”

Mandy Silva, manager of the Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Health Board’s ‘Designed to Smile’ programme, said that high priority areas will be served first. The bus will be manned by a dentist and a dental nurse and will visit schools in the Swansea and Neath Port Talbot area to try and reduce rates of decay and improve oral health education. The bus will also provide preventative treatments, including fissure sealants and fluoride varnish treatments, which help to protect the teeth against cavities.

The Penlan school is the first school in the area to be served by the bus. Head teacher, Phil Ellis, said that it was an honour to be the first school to benefit from the bus and added that the children were excited about the unit and looking forward to learning about how to look after their teeth and gums.

Ms Silva said that the mobile unit is an asset, which will help to provide valuable dental services without disrupting children at school.
