A new inquiry has been launched after it was revealed that a dentist faked his own death in order to claim massive insurance payouts.

Neil McClaren, a 46 year old dentist from Peterhead was detained by police following investigations into fraud and allegations and complaints from several financial organisations, including the NHS. It is believed that McClaren and his wife were planning to benefit from the significant financial payouts given out after he allegedly ‘died’. After investigations, police confirmed that the dentist, together with his wife, was set to benefit from around one million pounds; they will be on trial next year.

In light of the charges, the General Dental Council will not conduct an independent inquiry to determine how McClaren was able to register as a dental practitioner once he had faked his death. McClaren was formerly known as Emmanouil Parisis and was employed as a dentist in Barnstaple between 2003 and 2009. The previous year, it was revealed that Emmanouil Parisis had died in a vehicle accident in Jordan; however, the dentist then once again registered with the GDC under the guise of Neil McClaren. The GDC has confirmed that the dentist was registered with the governing body as both Emmanouil Parisis and Neil McClaren.

McClaren’ case has now been referred to the GCD’s Interim Order’s Committee and the GDC will make no further comment at this time.

The preceding month McClaren was in court in Exeter with his wife and her sister; they are all Greek nationals and their trial is to begin in January. They are yet to reveal whether they will plead guilty or not guilty.
