New Dental Unit will Improve Access to Dental Care in Wales

A new dental unit will make a huge difference to local people in Cynon Valley, according to health officials.

The brand new unit, which is due to open in January, will house eighteen treatment units and will open at the Cynon Valley Neighbourhood Hospital in Mountain Ash in Rhondda Cynon Taf.

Access to dental services is a problem in the area and it is estimated that 10,000 people struggle to see a dentist. Health officials say that dentists in the area are reluctant to take on new patients because of the heavy workload.

Peter Ash, from Cardiff and Vale University Health Board, said that the new dental unit would be very valuable for the local community. The unit will be staffed by university students and trained dentists, who will assess and treat patients before referring them to general practices, to ensure they receive regular dental care.

David Thomas, chief dental officer for Wales, said that the centre would also be valuable for students, as they will gain practical experience and develop their communication skills, as well as their clinical skills.

The centre will be funded by the Welsh Government and managed by the Cwm Taf Local Health Board in conjunction with Cardiff University and Cardiff and Vale University Health Board.
