New dental targets launched in Fiji

The Fijian Health Ministry has announced new dental targets.

The Health Ministry has set a new target to provide all health centres in rural areas and sub-divisional health facilities with basic dental instruments and equipment.

Peni Namotu, a spokesperson for the ministry, said that the new measures have been launched to target poor standards of health amongst children in rural areas and remote islands. There is currently limited access to dental supplies and as a result, rates of decay and gum disease are very high.

The new measures will involve mobile dental equipment, which can be used by multiple communities; this will increase access to dental services and increase the number of people who can receive basic dental treatment. Namotu said that areas including Taveuni and Tukavesi were being highlighted as priority zones, as there are virtually no local dental services and people are forced to spend a lot of money on transportation to Savusavu or Labasa to get the treatment they need.
