A new dental surgery is set to open in a community hub, which will reunite the residents of Somers Town.

Last week, 18 huge beams were lifted into place on Winston Churchill Avenue, as work gets under way on a new community hub, which will bring two communities together. The hub, which will cost around £11 million, will house a GP surgery, a dental surgery, a youth club and a cafeteria and it is hoped that the facility will reunite the two communities, which have been separated by a dual carriageway for many years.

Nick Butler, project manager at BAM Construction, said that the operation to life the beams, which weigh 38 tonnes each, has been planned rigorously over a 3 month period; now that the beams are in place, it is easier to see the vision of the hub and how it will benefit the community in the future. Mr Butler said that putting the beams in place was a “landmark occasion” as the two communities have been separated for a long time.

Work on the new centre is set to be completed by summer next year. The hub has been funded by Portsmouth City Council.
