Plans to open a brand new multimillion dollar dental school in Adelaide have been announced. The new state of the art school will offer dental care for up to 50,000 patients.

The University of Adelaide Dental School will open next to the Royal Adelaide Hospital in 2017. The cost of the project is estimated at $54,000 and the bill will be covered by the university.

The dental school will open 48 hours a week, offering out of hours appointments in addition to standard services. Patients will be able to access care at weekends and during the evening.

Jack Snelling, health minister, said that the new dental school will significantly cut waiting times in the area, and enable the development of a partnership between the state and the university, which will last for many years to come. The university came up against stiff competition from UniSA, but Mr Snelling said that the University of Adelaide’s proposal was the “most compelling.”

The agreement will lead to the development of a 90 chair clinic, which will be housed in the dental school at the South Australia Health and Biomedical Precinct.

The clinic is expected to open in 2017. It will provide students with first class training facilities and resources, as well as offering them the chance to train alongside qualified professionals. The public will also be able to access treatment in a state of the art modern setting.

Professor Warren Bebbington, Vice-Chancellor of the university, said that the agreement underlines the university’s position as a leader in dental research and teaching.
