A new dental practice is set to open in premises formerly used as a taxi office in Redcar.

Planning officers at Redcar and Cleveland Council have approved an application to change the use of the premises to open a new dental surgery. The former Club Cars office on Queen Street will now house a new practice on the ground floor. The retail unit has recently been refurbished.

In a supporting statement submitted with the change of use application form, Dr Saranjit Nandhra, from Harborne, Birmingham, underlined the benefits of opening a dental surgery when there is currently a “critical shortage of NHS dentistry provision both locally and nationally.”

Opening a new practice in Redcar, the statement reads, “fulfils a vital need for the local community.” Dr Nandhra added that the practice will make “efficient use” of the premises, which are well-served by public transport and centrally located for residents.

Once the surgery opens, the team will comprise ten full-time staff members.

News of a new dental practice in the town was welcomed by local councillors, including Coatham ward councillor, Carl Quartermain. Cllr Quartermain said that he was “really pleased” to see investment in local services that actively support health and wellbeing in the community. The new surgery will also provide a boost for other businesses and hospitality venues in the area.

A survey conducted by Healthwatch earlier this year revealed that a third of people have experienced difficulty getting an appointment with a dentist in the North East during the pandemic.
