New Dental Clinic to Open in Shetland Later This Year

A new dental clinic will open in Shetland later this year, it has been announced.

The new practice will open on Market Street in Lerwick and will be managed by the owners of Lerwick Dental Practice. The clinic will offer both private and NHS dentistry, but the focus will be on NHS dental care. Around 80 percent of the workload will be NHS dentistry.

Building work to convert the premises into a state of the art dental clinic is already underway and the three dentists who own the existing practice are hoping to open the clinic by the end of the year.

When the work is completed, the new practice will be kitted out with the latest equipment, including four surgeries, a digital X-ray unit and the latest IT systems. A team of four dentists will be supported by an additional six members of staff.

The project is part of the Scottish Dental Access Initiative and has received the support of NHS Shetland as well as investment from the three owners.

Online registration will be available by the end of September and information relating to registration and services available at the practice will be provided in due course.

The directors of the practice said it’s a very exciting time and they are looking forward to getting the clinic up and running and welcoming new patients. The aim is to provide first class dental care in a modern setting. Chief executive of NHS Shetland, Ralph Roberts, echoed these sentiments, saying it is great news that building work is underway on a new practice, as the health board has been trying to attract a new independent provider in Shetland for some time now.

Eventually, the practice will be able to take up to 6,000 patients.
