A brand new dental clinic is set to open its doors to patients in Shetland this Friday, the 22nd January.

The new practice, which is located in the centre of Lerwick opposite the police station, will provide dental care for around 10,000 patients. Two dentists will start work on Friday and  another two will join in the near future.

The practice will provide NHS dental treatment and registration is now up and running. In the first year, the team hopes to register up to 10,000 patients, with a view to expanding in the future. Private services will also be available, but the team anticipates that around 80% of patients will be NHS.

A spokeswoman for Lerwick Dental Practice confirmed that three dentists based in Aberdeen were involved with the new venture. After visiting Shetland a number of times and falling in love with the people and landscapes, they decided to open a new clinic. With the help of the council and NHS Shetland, they were able to find suitable premises in offices previously occupied by the council.

The move has been supported by local residents, the local NHS trust and the council and it is believed that the clinic will make a positive difference to the local community.

Ralph Roberts, chief executive of NHS Shetland, said the trust had been trying to recruit new dentists to take on the NHS contract for the last few years and everyone is relived and excited to have a new clinic in the Centre of Lerwick.
