A new dental clinic for patients with special needs has opened at Cheshunt Community Hospital.

The state-of-the-art facility, which was purpose-built, will provide services for patients across Hertfordshire. Previously used as a minor surgery department, the wing has undergone renovation work to create a modern, spacious unit, which is equipped to provide first-class services for patients with physical and learning disabilities.

The new clinic replaces a practice in Hoddesdon, which had two surgeries. The site at the community hospital offers wheelchair and step-free access and the new treatment rooms boast larger dental chairs and the latest dental equipment. There is also a sensory room, which features a film wall, ambient lighting, a sound system and bubble tubes to help patients to feel calm and relaxed.

Hertfordshire Special Care Dental Service is an award-winning community-based dental service provider, which is part of Hertfordshire Community Trust.

The trust and members of the special care service have worked closely with the team at Billericay-based construction company, Ingleton Wood, to create a purpose-built facility, which offers incredible services for patients. Chris Mabbutt, partner at the building firm, said that it was an honour to be involved in such an important community project.

Una Monaghan, clinical director of special care dental services at Hertfordshire Community Trust, described the new clinic as “wonderful” and added that the feedback from patients has been incredibly positive so far.
