New dental clinic for Lerwick

Plans by NHS Shetland have revealed that a new dental clinic could be set up in Lerwick within the next two years.
The Shetland Times reports that the new practice could house as many as four dentists and could greatly improve access to NHS dentistry in the region.
Some Lerwick NHS patients wanting non-urgent treatments have been at the end of four-year waiting lists and this new clinic aims to remedy this problem.
It has been suggested that the new clinic could cost more than half a million pounds to set up and aims to be completed by 2011.
Mike Collins, head of dental services at NHS Shetland, said the project was part of the Scottish government’s new health targets.
He added that NHS health centres which provide dental in the region were doing well but were really stretched.
Local estate agents and surveyors have been approached to help decide on the best venue for the new clinic, as it has to offer disabled access and good parking.
Once the clinic is up and running a total of 15 dentists will be operating in Shetland, which the NHS believes is enough to cope with the demands of the population.
