New Dental Camera Wins Award for Fight against Plaque

The creators of a new invention, the iDENTifi, have won an award this week for the revolutionary new innovation. The team of scientists and dentists from the University of Liverpool created the impressive new camera that can cleverly detect plaque and early tooth decay before your dentist or you yourself would even know about it.

The iDENTifi uses specialised light which, combined with a digital camera, can easily identify a range of oral issues such as tooth decay and cavities. This is possible through the use of Qualitative  Light Induced Fluorescence technology or QLF for short, which uses blue light and specialised filters to show dental problems when a photo is taken of the patients mouth.

The device combines with the new iPad to give dentists and patients an easy and quick way to view the results. The iDENTifi can also be used with laptops, computers and smart phones.

There are currently dyes which do a similar job, dying any plaque in the mouth to give the patient a very much viewable sight into the reasons for thoroughly cleaning the mouth. However, this new device does so in a clean manner, as well as showing other oral issues, such as tooth decay and cavities on all areas of the tooth.

The orthodontic sector of dentistry in particular will be eagerly looking forward to the iDENTifi’s release, as it has been speculated to be exceptionally useful for patients with dental devices in their mouths, whether they be braces, dentures, implants, aligners or anything else. This is because orthodontics often find that patients have much more of a problem thoroughly cleaning their mouth with one of these devices already in place.

The iDENTifi is still going through dental trials but is scheduled for release around this time next year.
