New data shows that almost 900 children in Hull are on waiting lists for specialist dental care.

The Liberal Democrats claim that 897 children are currently waiting for treatment, with the average wait for the first assessment appointment now 45 weeks. This is almost double the average waiting time for England, which is 23 weeks. The data was obtained via the Freedom of Information Act.

Nationally, 27,000 children are on community dental services waiting lists for a routine assessment. Community dental teams provide services for children who have additional or complex needs who cannot access general dental services at high street practices. Examples include children with complicated dental issues, those with learning or physical disabilities and children who have severe and extensive untreated decay.

The Liberal Democrats described the situation as ‘heartbreaking’ and urged the government to act now to tackle backlogs and bring waiting times down.
