The contract offered to dentist y the NHS encourages dentist professionals to see patients too often.
A consumer health care body has claimed that the contract that dentist have agreed to sign suggests that dentists should treat patients more regularly, striking yet more waiting list fears.
The Patents Association has stated that the contract does not provide dentists with a fair reward for the preventative care work they issue top patients.
Trustee of the association, Dr Anthony Halperin, said: “It encourages them to see patients possibly too often, but carry out work which is not of a complex nature.
“Work of a complex nature is not being rewarded to the dentists. Therefore, as far as the patient is concerned, they may not be getting the more complex treatment that they may be requiring.”
Following the contract that was released in April 2006, the NHS saw a staggering 19,500 dentists sign up to the contract as of October of the same year, and agreed to provide NHS treatments.
However, the contract does allow for all dental professionals that signed up to provide both NHS and private dental work.
Dental practitioners have to claim for the courses of treatment they undertake as opposed to individual items of work.
