New collagen treatment for receding gums

Sample News Big

Dentists in the UK are offering a revolutionary new collagen treatment to combat severe tooth sensitivity caused by receding gums. Gingival grafting, a new treatment that involves using collagen that has been taken from donated human tissue; the collagen is processed and then sewn into the patient’s gums. The collaged is inserted into the gum line.

Receding gums affect thousands of people in the UK; often, the gums recede as a result of ageing but the condition can also be caused by teeth grinding, over-zealous brushing and chronic gum disease. When the gums recede this often results in extreme tooth sensitivity, which can be very painful.

Once the gums have started to recede they cannot grow back; however, with this new treatment, the gum line can be boosted using collagen that has been taken from donor tissue. Once the collagen has been implanted, the patient’s blood vessels will penetrate it and the gums will start to grow again. The new gum tissue will match the colour of the existing tissue as a result of the patient’s DNA proliferating through.

Dr Simon Darfoor, one of the first dentists in the UK to offer the procedure, said that there is very little chance of rejection, as the DNA is removed from the donor tissue before the collagen is implanted. Before the new collagen treatment became available, dentists used tissue from the soft palate in a procedure known as autologous grafting; the treatment process was much longer and often left patients in pain and discomfort. The new treatment takes just 15 minutes per tooth.
