New Campaign Launched to Boost Children’s Oral Health

A new oral health campaign has been launched in West Somerset, it has been announced.

The new Healthy Teeth campaign has been introduced in West Somerset and schools in the area are working in partnership with dental practices in Williton, Minehead and Dulverton.

The campaign is designed to encourage children to get involved in oral health and look after their teeth and gums. As part of the programme, children will now get a sticker in their Healthy Teeth Passport and children participating in the scheme will be entered into a prize draw. Schools will also be rewarded for supporting the scheme.

Rachel Blundell, practice manage of Blenheim House Dental Practice in Minehead, said that the scheme was a great idea, as too many parents bring their children to see a dentist when they already have symptoms of dental problems, such as toothache. Dentists at the practice want children to attend regular check-ups from an early age, so they can get used to the experience and associate it with positive thoughts, rather than assuming that every visit is going to involve pain, as a result of them only visiting when they have symptoms.

The team at Blenheim House hope that the new scheme will encourage parents to bring their children for check-ups on a regular basis.

NHS chiefs are hoping to roll out the programme in other areas of the county next year.
