Navy Dentist Eases Military Dog’s Dental Pain

A Navy dentist has stepped in to help cure Rocco, who is a military working dog, of his painful toothache.

Rocco required root canal treatment but there were no qualified animal dentists in the Northern Territory, meaning that he and his handler, Leading Aircraftswoman, Tegan Bowden, faced a lengthy trip across-state. However, Navy dentist, Lieutenant Commander, Daniel Allen, stepped in to save the day and relieve Rocco from his aches and pains.

LCDR Allen said that it was not unusual for military dentists to provide emergency treatment for animals and he was glad of the opportunity to hone his skills and work alongside local veterinary clinics.

LCDR Allen said that he was approached about the prospect of treating Rocco and after giving him a thorough examination he agreed that the dog needed treatment and set about making arrangements with the Parap Veterinary Hospital.

Alison Lawlor, manager at the hospital, said that Rocco’s case was the latest in a long history of cooperation between the hospital and the Royal Air Force in Darwin.

LCDR Allen said that the case was a great chance to work outside of the usual brief and work with other professionals.
