National Smile Month campaign encourages effective oral cleaning

This year’s National Smile Month campaign is in full swing. The theme of the 2023 campaign is effective oral cleaning.

Running from May 15th until June 15th, practices and dental teams across the country will be raising awareness of the importance and impact of thorough brushing and cleaning. The key message is to encourage everyone to brush their teeth twice a day to lower the risk of decay and gum disease.

Surveys suggest that over a third of Brits don’t brush their teeth twice a day. Brushing is the most effective way to remove bacteria and food debris from the mouth. This is essential because it reduces the risk of plaque formation. Plaque sticks to the teeth and gums causing decay and irritated, swollen and sore gums.

There are several ways practices are promoting tooth brushing this month, including hosting brush exchanges, running brush-a-thons for charity and teaming up with local schools and community groups to offer free dental advice through fun, educational sessions.

On Monday 15th May, people from across the world joined forces to take part in the Great British Brushathon to launch National Smile Month. The goal was to beat the existing record for simultaneous brushing, which was held by the Indian Association of Public Health Dentistry, Colgate-Palmolive India and the Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences. The record attempt took place in November 2019 and involved more than 26,300 people.

The Oral Health Foundation, which runs the campaign, will be hosting a series of activities in the coming weeks, including the annual Nominate a Smile competition. Three winners will be chosen by the charity with tickets to a comedy show up for grabs.
