National Smile Month 2011

Sample News Big

National smile month in the UK runs from the 15th of May to the 15th of June and local councils around the country have run events to raise awareness of the importance of dental health, to help you keep a lovely white smile.

One local borough that has embraced the event is Milton Keynes, which has launched multiple events across the area. Locals have held a series of meetings to discuss the oral health of the community in local libraries, such as happened at Kingston Library on Tuesday the 23rd of May, and organised fun, child-based teddy bear picnics at Conniburrow Children’s Centre on Wednesday the 8th of June.

The target audience in Milton Keyes was parents and children as Lucie Daleki, Oral Health Promotion Manager, explains, “we are delighted to be promoting the Smile Factor in Milton Keynes. We are holding a range of events during National Smile Month aimed at children and their parents.”

As well as small local events, organisers have been launching schemes across counties in an attempt to raise oral health awareness.

Oxfordshire launched a full out tour across a number of small market towns to get citizens involved. An oral health bus made its way from Didcot to Banbury, as well as many others, the bus team prioritised towns with low dental health when planning the tour.

Once arriving in the town, the bus became a walk in dental check-up clinic and saw its largest amount of success in Banbury, where 35 patients were seen to during the day. Over the full extent of the tour, the oral health bus examined the oral health of 117 people, and spoke with a total of 377 people.

The month long awareness event has been very successful all over the country and organisers feel that their objective of raising awareness has been successful, but hope to do better next year.
