A Nailsea dental firm has sent hundreds of pounds worth of dental supplies to help an oral health project in Zanzibar.

Iqbal Fazal, the managing director of Dental Saver and owner of Smilesaver Dental Care, has sent a 20ft container filled with supplies over to Zanzibar in a bid to provide local people with basic dental care. The project is run by Health Improvement Project Zanzibar, a charity that was set up by consultant Ru MacDonagh. The charity has already built two medical centres.

Mr Fazal, who is originally from Kenya, was inspired to join forces with the charity after talking to his family GP, Dr John Rees, who has worked tirelessly with Mr MacDonagh to make a difference in Zanzibar.

Healthcare in Zanzibar is extremely basic and life expectancy is just 49 years old. The ratio of doctors to people is 1:50,000, which is significantly lower than the UK ratio of 1:400.

Mr Fazal has historical links with Zanzibar. Both his grandfather and uncle were orphaned there and the project has gained even greater importance and relevance since he was informed of this by his mother.

Mr Fazal has been working to fill the container for the last two years and it finally set sail to Zanzibar on Friday 7th March.
