Mydentist has revealed plans to merge three separate dental practices to form a new super clinic in Middlesbrough.

Mydentist, Europe’s largest dental provider, plans to close three dental surgeries in Middlesbrough and open a huge new practice at Cleveland Retail Park. If the merger goes ahead, the clinics in Newlands, Martonside and Ormesby would close.

The vast new clinic would open at the retail park in premises formerly used as a Peacocks store. The practice would offer extended opening hours and increased capacity. Opening hours would increase from 40 hours per week to around 50 hours and 12 surgeries would open initially. This number could rise to 14 if there is a demand for more appointments once the clinic is up and running. The total cost of the project is estimated at £1.5 million.

If the merger does not proceed as planned, there is a chance that the Newlands mydentist practice would close, as there is currently only one dentist.

Regional director of operations, Shaun Wilde, explained the decision to relocate to the retail park. He said that town centre locations had been explored but the retail park offered a better option when considering transport links, rental fees, accessibility and square footage.

Plans for the new clinic have been welcomed by local MP, Andy McDonald, but there are concerns about public transport and how easily patients will be able to travel to the retail park. Labour councillor, Denise Rooney, pointed out there is currently only one bus from the town centre to the site.
