Health bosses in Cornwall have confirmed that additional money will be spent to improve access to NHS dental services in Cornwall before the end of March.

NHS Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly successfully secured a share of a funding pot of £3.5 million to improve dental services over the course of the next month. The trust is also contributing to the pot in order to provide additional places for around 1,300 people.

The money will be spent in several areas of Cornwall, including Restormel, North Cornwall and Caradon. Funding has already been given to surgeries in Saltash and Penzance and they are working hard to reduce waiting lists.

Bridget Sampson, Deputy Director for Primary Care at NHS Cornwall and Isles of Scilly, said that the trust is committed to providing equitable access to NHS dental services. The trust has targeted areas where there was previously a shortage of dentists and thousands of new places have been made available in the last 2 years.

A recent survey revealed that access to dentists in the region is good and 91 percent of people surveyed said that they were able to access an NHS dentist and 81 percent classed their experience at the dentist as either ‘fairly good’ or ‘very good’.
