Mobile unit pulls up in Washington

A mobile unit will offer treatment to children in Washington next week.

The SmileMobile will visit the Sequim Boys and Girls Club to provide them with reduced rate dental care.

Figures show that around 60 percent of children in Washington suffer from tooth decay and many children are not visiting the dentist on a regular basis because their parents cannot keep up with the rising costs of dentistry; those that are covered by Medicaid often struggle to find dentists who accept the scheme, as many have been forced to go private to increase the amount of money they earn.

The SmileMobile accepts Medicaid patients and offers a sliding scale price system for those that are not covered by the scheme; the sliding scale system makes dental care more affordable, as the prices change according the individual’s financial situation.

The SmileMobile is manned by volunteer staff, who try their best to make going to the dentist a worthwhile and stress-free experience; many children worry about going to the dentist but staff do their best to make children feel at ease. The staff offer treatments including routine examinations, fillings, preventative treatments and minor surgery. The unit is aiming to treat 100 patients this year, an increase of 30 patients from last year.

Patients who want to benefit from the scheme are encouraged to contact the Sequim Boys and Girls Club.
