Missouri practice robbed of $205,000 via online banking

A Missouri dental practice has been robbed of $205,000 as a result of a withdrawal carried out via online banking.

Smile Zone, a practice designed to treat children, has been targeted by cyber experts, who have gained access to the online account and withdrawn the money. The money was taken out last month.

According to security expert and former reporter, Brian Krebs, the hackers have used a Trojan horse programme to access the practice’s online bank account. The Trojan horse allows people to access online accounts without the computer flagging up security concerns or prompting the user to give additional security information.

Trojan horse programmes including Zeus and Zbot have been used by cyber thieves to target small and medium sized businesses, with thousands of dollars stolen each year. In order to protect against online banking fraud and felony, security experts advise businesses to use specific online banking systems; this will help to prevent attacks from Trojan horse programmes.

It is believed that the Missouri Smile Zone practice has not received any financial compensation from their bank.
