Mereweather dentist Georgina Seto has swapped the skies for the high seas to help people in need. Flight Lieutenant Seto, from the Royal Australian Air Force, is currently serving on the US Navy hospital ship, providing much-needed dental care for people living in poor communities.

Seto has recently returned from a trip to Siau, a remote island in the Sulawesi Province of Indonesia where she was part of a team of 9 dental professionals providing urgent pain relief for more than 200 patients per day. Seto said that most of the people she helped had never even seen a dentist before and many of them were suffering from severe pain.

Seto is working on the hospital ship as part of the Pacific Partnership 2012, an annual care project sponsored by the USA. There are currently more than 1,000 members of crew and medical staff on board the ship, which will travel to the Philippines, Cambodia, Indonesia and Vietnam over the course of a 12 week period; the aim is to deliver medical and dental care to some of the region’s poorest people.

After spending time in Siau, the ship is now heading towards the Philippines. This is the first overseas defence post for Flight Lieutenant Seto and she said that she is extremely happy to be involved with such a worthwhile assignment. She is planning to return home to Australia after the Philippines tour and is looking forward to spending time with her fiancé, friends and family.
