Merck&Co have won a case involving the safety of their Fosamax drug.

The case was launched by a woman, who claimed she suffered jaw problems after taking Merck&Co’s Fosamax drug, which is used to treat patients with osteoporosis. Louise Maley, from Indiana had been using the drug for eight years and claimed she suffered from a condition called osteonecrosis as a result of taking Fosamax.

At the trial, the jury in New York took just half an hour to vote in favour of the drug manufacturer, Merck&Co. Merck attorney said the plaintiff, Ms Maley, had been suffering from a number of medical conditions, which could have caused problems with her jaw.

Merck&Co is currently facing a number of similar cases involving Fosamax and they are expected to defend themselves in court many more times in the coming months and years. Fosamax had previously been a best-seller for Merck but sales have fallen significantly since cheaper versions of the drug have been put on the market by other manufacturers and brands.
